  • Design a drought-tolerant colorful garden with a large variety of plants

Designer's Notes

  • This project entailed a very large front yard that presented neutral architectural lines and coloring. The client's desire was to create a landscape that would be the main focus of the space adding personality and life to the site.

  • Incorporate a meadow to enhance movement with the soft breezes that come regularly to the area.

  • Add not only visual interest but touch and other senses with the sound of trickling water from an organically shaped water feature. The water feature also acts as a birdbath attracting hummingbirds and birds.

  • Choose a plant palette that attracts butterflies, birds, and hummingbirds to add lively movement to the landscape.

  • Plant a line of bamboos to emphasize mid-century architecture and provide privacy.

  • Balance the scale of this large area using different plant sizes, trees, and a meadow.

  • Use bright colors for accent only with more neutral tones to create a soft relaxing yet lively atmosphere.

Client Review

I hired Catherine Bosler, Bosler Earth Design, to provide both the design and installation for our large turf removal project and I couldn’t be happier with our choice. We were tackling almost 3000 sq. ft. of a front corner lot, the yard had layed fallow for years, the only thing growing was one palm tree. Our budget was tight and we had a lot of ground to cover. Catherine had to work within the strict guidelines of the rebate program established by the Water Co. She came to the project with extensive knowledge of those requirements and an artistic appreciation for the potential beauty to be found in a water starved landscape. Her background in production design was an added benefit. The design ideas always reflecting the architectural elements of our house which was just remodeled for a more contemporary look. After interviewing a number of Landscapers I found her design fees to be very reasonable; especially as she gave so generously of her time and knowledge. I’m a hands-on gardner with strong ideas about what I like. as we continued the design process she was open to my ideas and concerns, always finding solutions for any budgetary restrictions. The whole thing was brought to life by a wonderful crew and Catherine was there every step of the way overseeing the installation. I discovered Bosler Earth Design on Houzz, and quickly realized we were a perfect fit. I love the fact that she continues to check in on our yard and I look forward to working with her on other areas of our property. She’s not only an artist but runs a very professional business delivering exactly what she promised and more.
